Cornell at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Brown seeks to extend its winning ways and solidify its Ivy League standing Saturday when it hosts Cornell in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Murray Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the forecast calling for 49 degrees and clouds.

The Bears (18-14) enter with significant momentum and are projected by the Interstat game simulator as 7-3 winners, with the ELO system giving Brown a 57.1 percent chance of victory. Brown is coming off a 6-3 win at Harvard on Tuesday, a game in which right-hander Dylan Reid delivered a dominant performance.

Reid, the Bears’ pitcher to watch, threw seven scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out seven against the Crimson. The outing followed a six-inning, no-hit start against Dartmouth on April 12, and a seven-inning, one-hit shutout of Princeton on March 29. Over his past two starts, Reid has yielded just one earned run across 13 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Cornell (8-23) has struggled to find consistency, though the Big Red picked up a 10-6 victory at Binghamton on Tuesday. Trent Lopez served as the designated hitter in that game, going 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Lopez, Cornell’s player to watch, has shown intermittent power: he homered with an RBI in a 5-3 win over Yale on April 17, and added a solo shot against Binghamton on April 14. However, he has also endured multiple hitless games this season, including an 0-for-4 outing against Army on March 31.

Cornell’s offensive production has been uneven. The Big Red were swept in a three-game series at Penn earlier this month, losing 7-3, 6-5 and 14-5, and were shut out 15-0 by Dartmouth on April 4. Tyler Beaulieu and TJ Swidorski accompanied Lopez with productive games against Binghamton.

Brown has been formidable at home and has won five of its last six contests overall. The Bears’ pitching staff, anchored by Reid, has been a key factor. In their most recent win over Harvard, reliever Christian Keel added two scoreless innings. Brown dropped a pair of games to Columbia on April 18 but responded with a midweek victory.

The doubleheader marks the start of a pivotal stretch for both Ivy League programs. Cornell will look to disrupt Brown’s rhythm and climb out of the conference cellar, while the Bears aim to build on their winning record and remain in contention near the top of the standings.
