Dallas Baptist at Texas Christian

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — Rob Liddington Jr. singled home Brady Dallimore from second base with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday night, lifting Texas Christian to a 6-5 comeback victory over Dallas Baptist at Lupton Stadium.

The win improved the Horned Frogs to 25-15 overall, while the Patriots fell to 23-18. It was TCU’s second win over Dallas Baptist this season, having also won 11-5 in the teams’ previous meeting on March 24.

The decisive 10th inning was set up by a defensive miscue. Dallimore, who entered as a defensive replacement, reached base with one out when Dallas Baptist right fielder Ryan Martin misplayed a routine fly ball into a two-base error. After a fly out, Liddington stepped in and lined a single to left field off Patriots reliever Athan Kroll, easily scoring Dallimore with the unearned, winning run.

The game-winning hit was Liddington’s third RBI of the night, capping a 3-for-4 performance. His single in the eighth had tied the game at 5-5, scoring Jack Bell to complete TCU’s rally from an early four-run deficit.

Dallas Baptist had seized control with a four-run second inning, capitalizing on TCU mistakes. The inning featured a run-scoring single from Hogan Nelson and a sacrifice bunt turned fielder’s choice by Brooks Sartain that brought home another run, both aided by Horned Frogs errors.

Sartain was the offensive standout for the Patriots, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs. His solo home run to right field off TCU reliever Walter Quinn in the top of the eighth had briefly restored Dallas Baptist’s lead at 5-4.

TCU’s bullpen combination of Cade Nelson, Tanner Sagouspe and Quinn proved critical in stabilizing the game after the rocky start. Nelson, named the top star for Texas Christian, entered with two outs in the second inning and delivered 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one. His outing halted the Patriots’ early momentum and kept the Horned Frogs within striking distance.

Sagouspe was dominant in the ninth and 10th innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced to earn the win.

The Horned Frogs chipped away at the 5-1 deficit with single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Chase Brunson contributed two RBIs on two hits, including a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Dallas Baptist’s bullpen, led by strong outings from Aiden VanDeHatert, Armani Knipper and Kroll, kept TCU at bay for much of the night. VanDeHatert threw three hitless innings of relief, allowing one unearned run, while Knipper and Kroll each pitched two scoreless frames before the 10th-inning error.

TCU outhit Dallas Baptist 13-8 and executed two sacrifice bunts. The Patriots left seven runners on base.

The game defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 6-5 Dallas Baptist victory, though TCU was given a 56.4% probability to win by the same service’s ELO rating system.

Texas Christian opens a three-game home series against Houston on Friday. Dallas Baptist travels to face Florida International for a three-game set beginning the same day.
