Utah Tech at BYU
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — In-state foes Utah Tech and BYU meet Monday at Larry H. Miller Field, with the visiting Trailblazers looking to carry momentum from a strong stretch into the nonconference matchup.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MDT under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 71 degrees.
Utah Tech (23-13) enters on a high note after securing a road series win at Utah Valley, capped by a 6-5 victory Saturday. The Trailblazers have won seven of their last 10.
BYU (20-18) looks to rebound after dropping two of three at home to Arizona State, including a 12-8 loss Saturday where the Cougars’ bullpen struggled late.
A key matchup will feature Utah Tech’s Dakoda West, who is expected to see action on the mound. The right-hander has been dominant at times, including a seven-inning, no-hit relief appearance with six strikeouts in Saturday’s win over Utah Valley. Over his last three outings, he has allowed just five earned runs in 16.1 innings.
BYU will counter with first baseman Ezra McNaughton, who provides power in the middle of the order. He homered and drove in three runs in Saturday’s loss, showing signs of breaking out of a recent slump that saw him go hitless in four of his previous five games.
The recent series history heavily favors the Cougars. In two meetings last month, BYU outscored Utah Tech by a combined 37-7, winning 19-2 in Provo on March 10 and 18-5 in St. George on March 17.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest should be much tighter, projecting a narrow 8-7 victory for Utah Tech.
Following Monday’s game, BYU travels to face Arizona for a three-game series starting Thursday. Utah Tech continues its road swing with a Western Athletic Conference series at California Baptist beginning Friday.
