Nicholls State at Stephen F. Austin

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Interstat) — The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will look to build on their winning record and secure a series victory when they host the Nicholls State Colonels in the second game of a weekend set on Saturday at Jaycees Field.

First pitch is scheduled for Saturday afternoon under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 83 degrees.

The Lumberjacks (21-16) took the series opener on Friday, shutting out the Colonels. They enter with momentum from a 16-8 midweek win over Alcorn State, powered by a lineup that has averaged 7.4 runs over its last 10 games. A key contributor has been Julian Swift. The infielder is coming off a 2-for-4 performance Wednesday that included a home run and four RBIs, and he has driven in 15 runs over his last 10 contests.

Nicholls State (17-19) seeks to even the series after mustering just three hits in Friday’s loss. The Colonels have dropped four of their last five games. A player to watch for the Colonels is Will Mabry, who has seen time as both a position player and a pitcher this season. On the mound, he tossed a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout in his last appearance on April 14. At the plate, he recorded a hit and an RBI in a game against Incarnate Word on March 21.

The Lumberjacks hold the edge in the season standings, but the Colonels have shown the ability to score in bunches, posting 11 runs in a game twice in recent weeks.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Stephen F. Austin 7, Nicholls State 5.

Following Saturday’s contest, the teams will conclude the series on Sunday. Nicholls State will then travel to face Jackson State on Tuesday. Stephen F. Austin’s next matchup is at home against Texas-Arlington on Tuesday before hitting the road for a conference series at Northwestern State next weekend.
