Nevada at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — Nevada unleashed a 15-run, 15-hit offensive barrage and rode a dominant starting pitching performance to rout New Mexico 15-2 in a Mountain West Conference baseball game Saturday evening.

The Wolf Pack (19-14, 2-3 MW) seized control immediately, sending 10 batters to the plate in a six-run first inning against Lobos starter Tyler Do. The rally featured a two-run double by Junhyuk Kwon and an RBI single from Kaito Yamaguchi, setting a commanding tone.

Nevada starter Ryan Oakes was the story on the mound, delivering his best outing of the season. The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on just six hits while striking out six and walking three. More critically, he protected the large early lead, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning after the Lobos had scored their only runs. Oakes’ performance marked a sharp turnaround after allowing four earned runs in a loss to San Jose State in his previous start.

The Wolf Pack offense never relented, adding three runs in the second inning and four more in the third to chase Do after just 2 2/3 innings. Do was charged with five earned runs on six hits. Nevada continued to apply pressure, scoring single runs in the fifth and five more in the eighth inning to put the game far out of reach.

Every Nevada starter reached base at least once, with six recording multiple hits. Kwon went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jayce Dobie was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Mikey Cruz drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 night. Catcher Jake Harvey had a two-run single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the eighth, finishing with three RBIs.

The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After New Mexico’s Andrew Carris hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 15-2, the Lobos had runners on second and third with one out, threatening to build momentum. Oakes induced a swinging strikeout from Cole Waslefsky and got cleanup hitter Noah Ashby to pop out to shortstop, stranding both runners and effectively extinguishing New Mexico’s final hope.

Rominic Quiban provided an exclamation point for Nevada with a solo home run to right field in the fifth inning, part of his two-hit, two-RBI night.

New Mexico (22-15-1, 4-4) managed just six hits total, with Carris and Christian Diaz each recording a single and a triple. The Lobos’ two runs came on an RBI triple by Diego Trujillo in the third and Carris’ single in the fourth.

Nevada reliever Eric Valdez closed the game with two perfect innings, striking out two.

The lopsided result defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 7-5 New Mexico victory and gave the Lobos a 54% probability to win.

The victory gave Nevada the series lead after taking a narrow 3-2 win in the opener Friday night. The teams conclude the three-game conference series Sunday afternoon.
