Bucknell at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — William Parker drove in five runs without recording an official at-bat, and the Army Black Knights erupted for 11 runs over the second and sixth innings to rout the Bucknell Bison 14-3 in a Patriot League game Friday at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw Army overcome an early three-run deficit with immediate and sustained offensive force, improving its record to 20-15 overall. Bucknell fell to 20-16.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the first inning, directly answering Bucknell’s early outburst. The Bison had struck quickly against Army starter Andrew Berg. In the top of the first, Michael Trommer singled and Ty Lagoni followed with a two-run homer to center field for a 3-0 lead.

Army’s response was swift and decisive. Josiah Overbeek and Thomas Schreck opened the bottom half with singles. Parker, the Black Knights’ left fielder, then crushed a three-run homer to left-center field off Bucknell starter Mikey Myro, instantly erasing the deficit and tying the game 3-3. The blast set the tone for the remainder of the contest, as Army never trailed again.

Berg settled in after the rocky first, delivering a strong seven-inning performance to earn the win. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, striking out six and walking one. His effort provided stability as the Army offense continued to build its lead.

The Black Knights broke the game open in the second inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring four runs on just two hits, aided by three walks and a hit batter. The rally chased Myro and continued against reliever Dante Pavone. Key plays included an RBI walk by Overbeek, a bases-loaded walk by Schreck to force in a run, and another bases-loaded walk by Parker, his fourth RBI of the game. Jack Quinlan added a sacrifice fly to cap the inning, giving Army a commanding 7-3 advantage.

Bucknell’s Trommer hit a solo home run in the third to trim the lead to 7-4, but it was the final run the Bison would muster. Berg and the Army bullpen silenced the Bucknell bats the rest of the way.

Army added two more in the fifth on an RBI double by Zac Farrell and a sacrifice fly by Chris Barr. Parker collected his fifth RBI in the inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Black Knights put the game completely out of reach in the sixth, scoring five runs, all unearned, after a Bucknell error extended the inning. Barr cleared the bases with a three-run triple and then scored himself on a throwing error by the shortstop, making it 14-3.

Parker finished 1 for 1 with the home run, five RBIs, and two hit-by-pitches. Schreck went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Farrell added two doubles and an RBI, while Barr drove in four runs.

For Bucknell, Trommer led the offense, going 2 for 3 with a home run, a single, two runs scored and an RBI. Lagoni’s first-inning homer accounted for the other two Bison runs. The team managed only five hits total after the first inning.

The victory gave Army a 1-0 lead in the three-game weekend series. The teams were scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday. The result surpassed the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-6 Army win. The Black Knights’ ELO win probability was 64.10 percent.

Army next hosts Marist on Tuesday before a Patriot League series with Lafayette next weekend. Bucknell travels to Penn State on Tuesday before preparing for a home series against Navy.
