Arizona State at BYU
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — In a stunning offensive display that defied pregame projections, the BYU Cougars erupted for a 19-9 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in a seven-inning Big 12 conference game shortened by the league’s run rule on Thursday night at Larry H. Miller Field.
The game, which saw a combined 31 hits, was decisively swung by a relentless BYU lineup that overcame an early deficit and never relented. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a tight 8-7 win for Arizona State, with the Sun Devils given a 64.5% probability to win based on ELO ratings. Instead, the Cougars authored a lopsided result that improved their record to 20-16, while the Sun Devils fell to 26-13.
The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the bottom of the fifth inning, transforming a competitive game into a blowout. Holding a 10-9 lead, BYU exploded for five runs to break the game open. The inning was capped by Bryker Hurdsman, the game’s top star, who launched a three-run homer to deep center field. That blast, part of a perfect 4-for-4, five-RBI night for the right fielder, extended the Cougars’ lead to 15-9 and effectively sealed the outcome.
Hurdsman’s performance was a catalyst throughout, contributing key hits in multiple rallies. His recent surge continued, rebounding from an 0-for-4 outing on April 13 to drive in runs in three straight games prior to Thursday’s breakout.
BYU’s offense was a collective force. Tu’alau Wolfgramm went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the sixth and three RBIs. Cooper Jones was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Ryder Robinson added three hits and two RBIs. Every starter in the Cougars’ lineup reached base at least once as the team amassed 18 hits.
Arizona State, which finished with 13 hits, was led by Matthew Polk, who also had a perfect 4-for-4 night that included a solo home run in the seventh inning and three RBIs. Austen Roellig drove in three runs on a seventh-inning triple.
The game began with both teams scoring early, but BYU steadily chipped away at Arizona State’s pitching. The Sun Devils used four pitchers, with only Nick Anello providing a scoreless inning of relief. BYU starter Wayland Crane earned the win, going four innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.
The Cougars sent 10 men to the plate in their five-run fifth and added four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Wolfgramm’s two-run shot and an RBI triple from Cooper Jones. Arizona State mounted a final rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on Roellig’s triple, but it was not enough to extend the game beyond the mercy rule.
The two teams will continue their three-game Big 12 series at Larry H. Miller Field on Friday and Saturday.
