Incarnate Word at Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Tech Red Raiders look to get back on track Wednesday when they host the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a nonconference matchup at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, with evening temperatures expected around 84 degrees under cloudy skies.
Texas Tech (20-15) enters after dropping two of three at home to West Virginia, including a 10-2, 10-inning loss Sunday. The Red Raiders’ bullpen has struggled, a trend personified by reliever Connor Mohan. The right-hander has taken the loss in four of his last five appearances, allowing 17 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings in that span. The team will need more stability on the mound against an Incarnate Word squad capable of scoring runs.
The Cardinals (16-19) arrive in West Texas following a Southland Conference series loss at McNeese State, falling 8-6 on Sunday. A bright spot in that defeat was reliever Fawster Voytko, who turned in a unique line: 7 1/3 innings of hitless relief, though he was charged with four earned runs. Voytko has been effective in a versatile role, posting a 0.00 ERA in five of his last seven outings, and will be a key arm for UIW.
Offensively, Incarnate Word catcher Colin Cymbalista provided the power Sunday, hitting a three-run homer. The Cardinals have shown resilience, winning two extra-inning games in recent weeks, including a 5-3, 10-inning victory at Lamar on March 28.
Texas Tech’s offense, which managed just two runs in 10 innings Sunday, will aim to rebound. The Red Raiders had been productive prior to the weekend, scoring 10 or more runs in three of their previous five games.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be close, with a predicted final score of Texas Tech 6, Incarnate Word 5.
This is a standalone midweek game for both programs before they return to conference play. Texas Tech opens a Big 12 series at Utah on Friday, while Incarnate Word travels to Texas State next Tuesday before hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next weekend.
