Texas-San Antonio at Baylor

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Tyce Armstrong launched a game-tying, two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning and Dylan Perez followed with a walk-off single as the Baylor Bears stormed back for a wild 10-9 victory over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in a nonconference baseball thriller Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the final half-inning, a stunning reversal that saw Baylor erase a two-run deficit after Texas-San Antonio had seemingly seized control in the top of the frame.

The Roadrunners, who led for the entirety of the game until the final swing, broke a 7-7 tie in the top of the 12th. Caden Miller led off with a double and scored on Drew Detlefsen’s single up the middle. Detlefsen, who finished 3 for 6 with two RBIs, later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Silva to give UTSA a 9-7 advantage.

Needing two runs to extend the game, Baylor’s rally began with one out in the bottom of the 12th when Janusek singled. Armstrong then stepped in and delivered his second home run of the night, a towering shot to left field that scored Janusek and knotted the game at 9. It was Armstrong’s 14th homer of the season, and he finished 3 for 6 with four RBIs.

After Clements singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Perez lined a 1-2 pitch into left-center field, bringing home pinch-runner Bergman to complete the comeback and set off a celebration at home plate.

The game was a marathon of momentum shifts and bullpen maneuvers. Texas-San Antonio struck first with two unearned runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on a Baylor error. The Bears responded immediately in the bottom half, batting around and scoring four runs on four hits, including a two-run double by Perez and an RBI double by Kennett, to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Armstrong’s first homer, a solo shot in the third, made it 9-6. Baylor pulled within a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Janusek. The Roadrunners’ bullpen, however, repeatedly stifled Baylor rallies. Connor Kelley was exceptional in relief, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts. Kendall Dove added 2 2/3 scoreless frames, and Sam Simmons pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless ball, though he was charged with three runs, all unearned, in the chaotic 12th.

Baylor’s relievers were equally pivotal in the extra-inning drama. Caleb Bunch worked two scoreless innings, and Caldwell McFaddin allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings before Luke DeVasher recorded the final out of the top of the 12th to earn the win.

The Roadrunners out-hit the Bears 15-10 but left 14 runners on base. Baylor improved to 21-15 overall, while Texas-San Antonio fell to 25-12. The Bears avenged an 11-6 loss to the Roadrunners from March 1.

Both teams open conference series at home Friday. Baylor hosts Texas Christian, while Texas-San Antonio welcomes Charlotte.
