West Virginia at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — Chansen Cole delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and the West Virginia offense erupted late to secure a series victory, defeating Texas Tech 10-2 in 10 innings in a Big 12 conference game Sunday afternoon and evening at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The game, which began in the afternoon and stretched into the evening, was a tight contest for nine innings before the Mountaineers broke it open with an eight-run 10th inning. The victory improved West Virginia to 24-8 overall, while Texas Tech fell to 20-15.

Cole was the story for most of the day. The West Virginia starter dominated the Red Raiders’ lineup, pitching eight strong innings and allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. He carried a shutout into the sixth inning and left with a 2-1 lead after the eighth, putting his team in position to win.

Texas Tech’s only early offense came in the sixth. After a walk to Garcia and a double by Quintanar, Tracer Lopez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the West Virginia lead to 2-1. Lopez finished the day 3 for 3.

The Mountaineers had built their initial lead with single runs in the first and second innings. Ineich Matt led off the game with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Schoenfeld’s RBI triple. Sean Smith followed with an RBI single. In the second, Armani Guzman doubled, advanced on a flyout and scored on a groundout by Brock Wills.

The game remained 2-1 until the dramatic top of the 10th. Facing Texas Tech reliever Jacob Rogers, the Mountaineers sent 13 batters to the plate. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Brock Wills, an RBI single from Armani Guzman and a two-run single from Matthew Graveline. Sean Smith also added an RBI single in the frame, part of his 4-for-5, two-RBI day. West Virginia piled up 18 hits total.

Texas Tech mounted a threat in the bottom of the ninth against Cole and the West Virginia bullpen, loading the bases with one out. A walk to Ferraro forced in a run, making it 2-2. Ian Korn entered in relief and needed just two pitches to escape the jam, inducing a popout to right field and a lineout to center, sending the game to extra innings.

After the Mountaineers’ offensive explosion in the 10th, Korn returned to work a clean bottom half, sealing the victory. Connor Mohan took the loss for Texas Tech, allowing three earned runs over 3 1/3 innings of relief.

The most important part of the game was the bottom of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded, one out, and the tying run at third, Korn’s immediate entry and efficiency under extreme pressure preserved the tie and completely shifted the momentum. His two-pitch escape deflated the home crowd and set the stage for West Virginia’s game-breaking inning immediately after.

The win gave West Virginia the series, two games to one, after the teams split the first two contests. The Mountaineers next play Penn State on Wednesday in Hagerstown, Maryland. Texas Tech travels to face Abilene Christian on Tuesday.
