Cornell at Penn
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Penn Quakers will look to complete a three-game Ivy League sweep of the Cornell Big Red on Sunday evening at Hank DeVincent Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies with temperatures around 61 degrees.
Penn (12-15 overall) took both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, winning 14-5 and 7-3. The Quakers’ pitching dominated the latter game, a trend they hope continues in the series finale.
The spotlight will be on the mound for both sides. Cornell (6-19) will turn to right-hander Huxley Holcombe, who was brilliant in relief just a day ago. In Saturday’s 7-3 loss, Holcombe tossed 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief, allowing one earned run while striking out five. Over his last three appearances, which include two starts, he has a 1.00 ERA across 16 2/3 innings, surrendering just five total hits.
He will be opposed by Penn ace Marty Coyne, who is coming off a dominant performance in the same game. Coyne earned the win Saturday with seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and fanning seven. In his last two Ivy starts, covering 13 1/3 innings, he has not allowed a run.
Penn’s offense, which produced 21 runs on Saturday, was led by Gavin Collins, who homered and drove in two in the nightcap, and catcher Ernie Echevarria, who added two RBIs. Cornell’s Mason Barela had three of his team’s six hits in that contest.
According to Interstat, the Quakers are heavy favorites with a 71.8% probability to win. Their game simulator projects a narrow 5-4 Penn victory.
After Sunday, Penn travels to face Monmouth on Wednesday before an Ivy series at Princeton next weekend. Cornell hosts Binghamton on Tuesday before welcoming Yale for a three-game set starting Saturday.
