Maryland-Eastern Shore at Delaware State

LEIPSIC, Del. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in a difficult season will meet Sunday afternoon when Delaware State hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore in the finale of a three-game Northeast Conference series at Soldier Field.

The Hornets (3-27) and Hawks (6-24) have split the first two games of the set. Delaware State won 5-4 on Friday before Maryland-Eastern Shore responded with an 11-4 victory Saturday afternoon behind a huge performance from catcher Jonathan Gonzalez Perez. He went 2 for 5 with two home runs and seven RBIs in the win.

Gonzalez Perez will be a key figure again for the Hawks. Over his last 10 games, he is batting .324 with four home runs and 18 RBIs, providing much of the team’s offensive punch.

For Delaware State, reliever Shane Carter has been a bright spot. He pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief in Saturday’s loss, striking out three. In his last five appearances, Carter has not allowed an earned run over 10 innings, surrendering just four hits.

Both teams have struggled to find consistency. The Hawks have lost 10 of their last 13 games. The Hornets have lost eight of their last nine, with their only win in that stretch coming against the Hawks on Friday.

Sunday’s forecast calls for clear skies and a first-pitch temperature of 63 degrees.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the series rubber match is projected to be a low-scoring affair, with Delaware State edging Maryland-Eastern Shore 2-1.

Following the series, Delaware State travels to face in-state rival Delaware on Tuesday. Maryland-Eastern Shore’s next action is a three-game home series against Mercyhurst starting Friday.
