Holy Cross at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — The Holy Cross Crusaders and Bucknell Bison will meet in the rubber match of their Patriot League series Sunday afternoon at Eugene B. Depew Field, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. under clear skies and temperatures near 57 degrees.
The series is tied after a split of Saturday’s doubleheader. Bucknell (19-14) took the opener 5-4, but Holy Cross (16-17) responded with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The Bison won Friday’s series opener 14-5.
A key rematch on the mound is anticipated. Holy Cross right-hander Jaden Wywoda is expected to start after a tough-luck loss Saturday. Wywoda struck out seven over six innings but allowed five earned runs in a 5-4 defeat. His recent outings have been a study in extremes, including a seven-inning, no-hit shutout with nine strikeouts at Lehigh on March 21.
Bucknell will counter with reliever-turned-starter Jake Schultz, who earned the win in Saturday’s first game. Schultz was dominant, firing four scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits. He has been a reliable arm out of the Bison bullpen, with Saturday marking his longest outing of the season.
Offensively, Bucknell’s Lleyton Coupe drove in two runs in Saturday’s win. For Holy Cross, Ryan Grundy and Simon Landry provided sparks in the lineup during the narrow loss.
The Interstat game simulator projects a close contest, favoring Bucknell 7-6. The Bison hold the overall season record advantage, but the Crusaders have shown they can score in bunches, plating 14 runs in Friday’s contest.
Following Sunday’s game, Holy Cross travels to Brown on Tuesday. Bucknell heads to Villanova the same day before a pivotal Patriot League series at Army next weekend.
