North Carolina at Clemson
CLEMSON, S.C. (Interstat) — Owen Hull delivered a career performance, going 5 for 6 with a home run and five RBIs, to power North Carolina to a 12-5 victory over Clemson in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The win secured the series for the Tar Heels, who took two of three from the Tigers after splitting the first two games of the weekend set. North Carolina improved to 30-6-1 overall and strengthened its hold atop the ACC standings. Clemson fell to 23-14.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the fourth inning, which broke open what had been a tight contest. Leading 2-1, North Carolina erupted for five runs, capitalizing on a Clemson error and a decisive blow from Hull. With the bases loaded and one out, Macon Winslow’s single drove in two runs, with an error on the play allowing a third to score. Hull then followed by launching a three-run homer to right field off reliever Jacob Fowler, stretching the Tar Heels’ lead to 7-1 and effectively putting the game out of reach early.
Hull, the center fielder, added an RBI single in the fifth and another run-scoring single in the eighth, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. His five hits and five RBIs were both game highs. Gavin Gallaher also homered for North Carolina, a two-run shot in the first inning that opened the scoring.
North Carolina’s offense amassed 16 hits and drew eight walks, relentlessly pressuring a Clemson pitching staff that used eight hurlers. Starter Folger Boaz earned the win despite a rocky outing, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five. The Tar Heel bullpen was dominant, as Walker McDuffie threw three perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts, and Tom Chmielewski recorded the final out via strikeout.
Clemson managed 10 hits but stranded multiple runners, going just 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position. The Tigers scored single runs in the second and fifth innings, then mounted their only significant threat in the sixth, plating three runs. Bryce Clavon’s two-run triple and Jacob Savoie’s RBI single chased Boaz and cut the deficit to 7-5. McDuffie entered and induced an inning-ending groundout to halt the rally, and Clemson did not threaten again.
Clemson starter Aidan Titsworth took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits in three-plus innings. Reliever Nick Frusco provided a bright spot for the Tigers with a scoreless ninth inning.
The victory continued a strong stretch for North Carolina, which has won 12 of its last 13 games. The Tar Heels host UNC Wilmington on Tuesday before a weekend series against Georgia Tech. Clemson travels to face Charlotte on Tuesday before a pivotal ACC road series at Virginia beginning Thursday.
The final score exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast an 8-5 North Carolina win. The Tar Heels entered with a 58.1% win probability according to the service’s ELO system.
