CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes will look to complete a series sweep when they host the Virginia Tech Hokies in an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball matchup Sunday at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 81 degrees.
The No. 7-ranked Hurricanes (23-7, 6-2 ACC) have dominated the first two games of the series, outscoring the Hokies 26-2. Miami won 19-1 in seven innings on Friday and followed with a 7-1 victory on Saturday. The Hurricanes’ potent offense and strong pitching have overwhelmed Virginia Tech (14-14, 3-8) so far.
A player to watch for Miami is right-hander Rob Evans. In Friday’s series opener, Evans delivered a dominant performance, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts over five innings to earn the win. For the season, he has been a key part of a stout Hurricanes rotation.
Virginia Tech will seek to salvage the final game and avoid the sweep. A bright spot in Friday’s lopsided loss was reliever Jake Wise, who tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. The Hokies will need a longer outing from their starter Sunday to challenge the surging Hurricanes.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Miami 7, Virginia Tech 5.
Following Sunday’s contest, Virginia Tech returns home to face Liberty on Tuesday. Miami stays home to host Florida International on Tuesday before a key ACC series next weekend against Wake Forest.
