Yale at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — The Yale Bulldogs and Fairfield Stags, sporting identical momentum from weekend series wins, meet in a nonconference midweek clash Tuesday at Webster Bank Arena.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 68 degrees.

Yale (13-8) enters having taken two of three from Penn, including a 3-2, 10-inning victory Sunday behind strong pitching from Tate Evans and Teo Spadaccini and a two-hit day from catcher Bryce Miller. The Bulldogs’ offense has shown potency, scoring 16 runs in a win Saturday.

Fairfield (11-11) split a doubleheader at Binghamton on Sunday, powered by a 5-1 win in the nightcap. Center fielder TJ Schmalzle was the standout, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs in that victory. Schmalzle is a key bat for the Stags, who have won five of their last seven.

A player to watch for Yale is right-hander Daniel Cohen. He is coming off a dominant complete-game shutout against Penn on March 29, allowing just two hits over nine innings with six strikeouts. His recent outings have been inconsistent, but he provides a proven arm for the Bulldogs’ staff.

The Stags will counter with Schmalzle, who looks to stay hot. Over his last 10 games, he has driven in six runs, with his multi-homer performance highlighting his run-producing capability.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, predicting an 8-7 victory for Yale.

The Bulldogs continue their road swing with an Ivy League series at Princeton this weekend. Fairfield hits the road for a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference set at Merrimack starting Thursday.
