San Jose State at Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — Two local rivals with identical records and recent offensive explosions will meet Monday when the San Jose State Spartans visit the Santa Clara Broncos at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Both teams enter the nonconference matchup at 12-14 overall. The Spartans are coming off an 18-8 road win at UNLV on Sunday, while the Broncos defeated Loyola Marymount 10-5 at home.
San Jose State’s offense has been potent, averaging over eight runs per game in its last 10 contests. The Spartans routed Santa Clara 18-6 just six days ago in the teams’ most recent meeting on March 24. In that game, San Jose State outfielder Brent Cota went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs. Cota is the Spartans’ hottest hitter, coming off a 4-for-5, six-RBI performance Sunday that included a home run. Over his last 10 games, he has four homers and 16 RBIs.
Santa Clara will look to slow that momentum and even the season series after dropping two of three to San Francisco last weekend before taking two of three from Loyola Marymount. A key arm for the Broncos is reliever RJ Meyn, who threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in Sunday’s victory. Over his last four appearances, Meyn has allowed just two hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven.
The Broncos’ offense was led Sunday by designated hitter Tate Medicoff, who had three hits and three RBIs, and second baseman Thomas Ferroggiaro, who added three hits, including a home run.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is San Jose State 7, Santa Clara 5.
Following Monday’s game, San Jose State begins a three-game home series against Washington State on Thursday. Santa Clara opens a West Coast Conference road series at San Diego on Thursday.
