Cal State Fullerton at San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Paul Contreras launched two home runs, including a decisive two-run shot in the eighth inning, to power the Cal State Fullerton Titans to an 11-6 victory over the San Diego Toreros on Tuesday night at USD Sports Center.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Titans, who improved to 11-13. San Diego fell to 8-15.

Contreras, the Titans’ right fielder, broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a solo homer to left-center off reliever Christian Garcia. He then provided crucial insurance in the eighth, following an RBI single by Nick Miller with a two-run blast to deep left field off Nate DeSchryver. Contreras finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

The most important sequence of the game occurred in the top of the eighth. Leading 8-6, the Titans saw Cameron Kim double and score on Miller’s single. Contreras then stepped in and delivered his sixth homer of the season, extending the lead to five runs and effectively stifling San Diego’s momentum after the Toreros had scored in three consecutive innings.

Cal State Fullerton’s offense amassed 15 hits. Cam Burdick went 3 for 5 with a solo homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the ninth. Niko Lombardi added two hits and an RBI.

San Diego was held to seven hits but capitalized on three Titans errors to score three unearned runs in a four-run fifth inning. Gabe Springer led the Toreros, going 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the seventh, two RBIs and a walk. Diego Gonzalez also homered for San Diego in the sixth.

The Titans’ bullpen was instrumental in securing the win after starter Nick Santivanez threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Five relievers — Dylan Goff, Landon Martin, Andrew Wright, Brock Mayer and Dylan Nieto — combined for five hitless innings of work, allowing just one unearned run while striking out eight. Martin, Wright and Goff each had perfect outings with multiple strikeouts.

San Diego reliever Caleb Sebek provided a bright spot for the Toreros, striking out six over 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief.

The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, which gave San Diego a 62.9% probability to win and simulated a 4-1 Titans victory.

Cal State Fullerton travels to face Hawaii on March 29. San Diego opens a three-game series against Santa Clara at home on April 2. The two teams will meet again in a rematch at Cal State Fullerton on April 14.
