Houston Christian at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant start from Cole Hubert and timely power at the plate propelled Texas A&M to a 5-1 victory over Houston Christian on Tuesday night at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Hubert, the Aggies’ top star, delivered a crucial bounce-back performance, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out three, effectively silencing the Huskies’ offense after a rough outing the previous week. This strong start set the tone for the Aggies’ pitching staff, which combined to limit Houston Christian to eight hits despite issuing several free passes.
The most important sequence of the game came early, as Texas A&M quickly erased a one-run deficit and seized control. After Houston Christian scratched across an unearned run in the top of the first inning without a hit, capitalizing on an error, a walk, and a fielder’s choice, the Aggies answered immediately in the bottom half. Leadoff hitter Caden Sorrell connected for a solo home run to right field, tying the game and shifting momentum.
Texas A&M took the lead for good in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Blake Binderup was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI groundout by Becker following a Houston Christian fielding error. The Aggies then extended their lead with solo power again in the fourth, as Jorian Wilson launched a home run to right field, making it 3-1.
Houston Christian starter Jett Feltman kept his team close with four innings of no-hit ball, but he was undone by command issues, walking four and allowing two earned runs. The Huskies’ best scoring chance came in the eighth inning. Trailing 5-1, they loaded the bases with one out after an RBI single by Halligan. However, relievers Juan Vargas and Clayton Freshcorn combined to strike out the next two batters, extinguishing the threat. Freshcorn earned the save with 1 1/3 perfect innings, striking out two.
The Aggies added two insurance runs in the sixth. Binderup drove in a run with a double, and he later scored on a wild pitch.
With the win, Texas A&M improved to 19-5 overall, while Houston Christian fell to 11-13. The victory exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-6 Aggies win, though their ELO system gave Texas A&M an 89.2% probability of victory.
Texas A&M’s bullpen, featuring Grant Cunningham, Vargas, and Freshcorn, provided 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief behind Hubert. For Houston Christian, reliever Caleb Matthews was a bright spot, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings.
The Aggies next travel to open a Southeastern Conference series at Missouri on Friday. Houston Christian returns home to face Rice on Wednesday before beginning a Southland Conference series at Stephen F. Austin on Friday.
