Iowa at Illinois State
NORMAL, Ill. (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes delivered a commanding and unexpected road performance Tuesday night, shutting out the Illinois State Redbirds 11-0 at Duffy Bass Field in a nonconference midweek baseball game.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a narrow 7-6 victory for the home team. Instead, Iowa’s pitching staff combined for a three-hit shutout while the offense steadily built a lead before erupting late.
The Hawkeyes, now 12-8, set the tone in the first inning without a hit. Leadoff batter Gable Mitchell walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Iowa added an unearned run in the fourth. Caleb Wulf singled and later scored on a two-out RBI single from Kellen Strohmeyer after a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. Wulf then drove in Mitchell with a single in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0.
The most important sequence of the game arrived in the seventh inning, breaking open what had been a tight contest. With two outs and Mitchell on first after a single, Miles Risley connected on a two-run homer to left-center field off Illinois State reliever Carson Cormier. The blast provided critical breathing room, pushing Iowa’s advantage to 5-0 and shifting momentum decisively.
The Hawkeyes broke the game open entirely with a four-run eighth inning, capitalizing on Illinois State miscues. Joey Nerat walked, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, two runs scored on wild pitches. Mitchell then lifted a sacrifice fly, and Risley added an RBI bunt single to make it 9-0.
Iowa tacked on two final runs in the ninth on RBI singles from Strohmeyer and Kooper Schulte.
The offensive support was more than enough for a parade of Iowa pitchers. Starter Cole Moore and five relievers — Carter Wilcox, Justin Hackett, Beau Leisure, Ganon Archer and Brolan Frost — held the Redbirds scoreless through six innings. Tyler Guerin and Tate Slagle finished the combined shutout, with the staff benefiting from three double plays.
Illinois State, which fell to 16-8, never advanced a runner past second base. The Redbirds’ best chance came in the second inning when they put two runners on with two outs, but a pop-up ended the threat. Luke Stulga had two of his team’s three hits.
Iowa’s 11-hit attack was led by Mitchell, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Strohmeyer went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Risley drove in three runs, and Wulf added two hits and an RBI.
The Hawkeyes look ahead to a three-game home series against UCLA beginning Friday. Illinois State opens Missouri Valley Conference play on the road Friday at Evansville.
