Rhode Island at Quinnipiac

Cold, Wet Conditions Await Rams, Bobcats in Hamden

HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — A pair of teams looking to build on weekend victories will battle the elements when the Rhode Island Rams visit the Quinnipiac Bobcats in nonconference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:07 p.m. EDT under a forecast calling for rain and a temperature of 39 degrees.

Rhode Island (6-15) arrives after a wild 10-9 walk-off win over George Mason on Sunday. The Rams rallied late, with Nicholas Toro hitting a key home run and driving in three runs. Reliever Jake Cullen was pivotal in the victory, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Cullen, a right-hander, has been a bright spot lately. Over his last four appearances, he has allowed just one hit and zero earned runs over 8 1/3 innings, striking out eight.

Quinnipiac (7-13) is also coming off a win, having taken the series finale at Manhattan, 9-3, on Sunday. Starter Andrew Rubayo was dominant, firing six no-hit innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out four. The right-hander has been strong in three of his last four starts, including a seven-inning, two-run effort against Sacred Heart on March 15.

The Bobcats’ offense was powered by Peyton Vancas, who drove in two runs in the win.

Both teams have struggled for consistency this season. The Rams had dropped eight of nine before their current two-game win streak. The Bobcats had lost five of six prior to Sunday’s victory.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, this one is projected to be close, with a final score of Rhode Island 6, Quinnipiac 5.

Following this game, Rhode Island will host Bryant on Wednesday before opening Atlantic 10 play at Richmond. Quinnipiac travels to face state rival Connecticut on Wednesday before beginning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Saint Peter’s.
