New Mexico at Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — Two teams riding the momentum of high-scoring victories will meet Tuesday when the New Mexico Lobos visit the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
First pitch for the midweek, non-conference matchup is set for late afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures near 65 degrees.
Both clubs enter with identical 15-win records, though Texas Tech (15-8) holds a slight edge in winning percentage. The Red Raiders are coming off a wild 12-10 road win at Arizona on Sunday, powered by a potent offense. New Mexico (15-9) salvaged its series with Abilene Christian with an 11-5 home win the same day.
The game features two of the region’s hottest hitters. Texas Tech’s Connor Shouse has been a force, driving in nine runs over his last four games. The third baseman went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs in Sunday’s win and is hitting .429 (9 for 21) with three homers and 11 RBIs in his last five contests.
He’ll be countered by New Mexico’s power threat, Karsen Waslefsky. The Lobos’ shortstop broke out of a brief slump Sunday, launching a home run and driving in four runs against Abilene Christian. His bat is key for a New Mexico lineup that has seen fluctuating results, scoring 11 runs in its last win after being shut out twice in its previous five games.
Pitching matchups were not announced. The Lobos’ recent win featured a solid start from Diego Alvarez (5.1 IP, 3 ER), while the Red Raiders’ bullpen navigated a rocky start from Jackson Burns to secure Sunday’s victory.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Texas Tech is projected to win 7-3.
This contest begins a home-and-home series between the programs, who are scheduled to meet again in Albuquerque on April 7. For now, Texas Tech looks to protect its home field before opening a Big 12 series at TCU this weekend. New Mexico returns home to host Fresno State in Mountain West play starting Friday.
