Nebraska at Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — Jett Buck launched a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning Sunday to break open a tight game and propel the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a 9-5 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in a Big Ten Conference baseball series finale at Ray Fisher Stadium.
The win gave Nebraska (18-6, 2-1 Big Ten) the series after the teams split the first two games. Michigan fell to 11-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The game’s defining moment came with Nebraska clinging to a 5-4 lead in the ninth. Max Buettenback had just hit a solo home run, his first of the season, to make it 6-4. After a hit batter and a single loaded the bases with one out, Buck connected on a 1-0 pitch from reliever Logan Finkbeiner, sending it deep over the left-field wall for his fourth homer of the year. The four-run blast turned a one-run nail-biter into a comfortable five-run cushion.
Until Buck’s decisive swing, the game was a tense affair marked by strong pitching and missed opportunities. Nebraska starter Gavin Blachowicz set the tone with four dominant innings, allowing no hits and one unearned run while striking out four. He was named the game’s top star.
Michigan scratched out a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Stephen Jefferis and mounted its biggest threat in the sixth. Trailing 2-1 after a solo homer by Nebraska’s Rhett Stokes, the Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs against the Cornhuskers’ bullpen. A hit-by-pitch and a walk forced in two runs to tie the game at 3-3, but reliever J’Shawn Unger entered and struck out Tito Turner to escape further damage.
Nebraska immediately responded in the seventh. Dylan Carey led off with a solo homer, and Buettenback followed later in the inning with an RBI single to restore a two-run lead at 5-3. Michigan’s Brenden Stressler hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 5-4, setting the stage for the dramatic ninth.
Unger earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing no hits and two runs while striking out five. Michigan starter Cade Montgomery took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Nebraska outhit Michigan 10-8. Buettenback, in a reserve role, went 2-for-2 with the homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Stokes and Carey also homered for the Cornhuskers. For Michigan, Jefferis had two hits and two RBIs, while Stressler homered, walked twice and scored twice.
The victory improved Nebraska to 18-6, while Michigan evened its record at 11-11. The Cornhuskers next play at Kansas State on Tuesday. Michigan hosts Oakland on Tuesday.
