Portland at Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots erupted for a five-run third inning and rode a combined no-hit bid from their starting pitchers to a 13-4 victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
Portland, which improved to 13-7, pounded out 17 hits and clinched the series after winning the opener Friday. Loyola Marymount fell to 7-18.
The most pivotal sequence of the game came in the top of the third inning, breaking a scoreless tie. The Pilots sent 10 batters to the plate, capitalizing on small ball and timely hitting. Brady Avery and Ben Bean led off with bunt singles, and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt set the table. Trey Swygart then laced a single down the left-field line to score Avery. Carter Chun and Cooper Salk followed with sacrifice flies, and Nolan Miller capped the rally with an RBI double to give Portland a commanding 5-0 lead.
That was more than enough support for Portland starter Logan Anderson and reliever Kaden Segel. Anderson, the top star for Portland, worked five dominant innings, allowing no hits and two unearned runs. He walked four and struck out four. Segel took over in the sixth and finished the game, yielding no hits over four innings while allowing two runs, only one earned, and striking out six. Lions batters managed just seven hits, all coming after Anderson exited the game.
The Pilots broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning, highlighted by Miller’s two-run double. Pinch-hitter Troy Osborne added a two-run homer in the eighth, and Swygart drove in his second run of the game with a single in the ninth. Swygart finished 3 for 6 with two RBIs, while Miller went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Loyola Marymount’s offense was stifled until the sixth. After Anderson departed, the Lions capitalized on a fielding error to plate two runs on a fielder’s choice by Luke Danos. DJ Ghiorso, who went 2 for 3, drove in a run with a single in the seventh, and Nate Stiveson hit a solo home run in the eighth for the Lions’ final run.
Lions starter Adam Behrens took the loss, surrendering six runs on nine hits over six innings. Maxwell Schneider allowed one run in his inning of relief.
The victory extended Portland’s winning streak to three games. The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
