Albany at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — Ty Sallie delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday, lifting the NJIT Highlanders to a 5-4 victory over the Albany Great Danes in America East Conference baseball at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Highlanders, who evened the weekend series after a loss Friday, improved to 7-11 overall and in conference play. The Great Danes fell to 2-14.

The decisive rally began against new Albany reliever Ethan Nardacci in the 10th. Cole Campbell led off with a single and Austin Francis followed with a bunt single. After Jack Stead walked to load the bases with no outs, Sallie lifted a fly ball to deep right field, scoring Campbell easily to end the game.

The most important sequence of the contest came in the bottom of the seventh inning, which saw NJIT erase a one-run deficit and set the stage for the extra-inning finish. Trailing 3-2, the Highlanders strung together three consecutive two-out hits. Rowin O’Connor and Campbell singled, and Francis tied the game with an RBI single to left field, scoring O’Connor to knot the score at 3-3.

Albany had reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh. Levi McAllister led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by pinch-hitter Kyle Stephens.

The Great Danes then staged their biggest offensive surge in the eighth to go ahead again. They loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Anthony Anzaldi on a walk to Patrick DeSarno, a walk to Michael Maggio and a single by Cooper Loyal. Luke Filippi drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tying run, and McAllister followed with an RBI single to left to put Albany ahead 4-3. A wild pitch by new pitcher Tyler Kim allowed a third run to score in the inning.

NJIT had capitalized on shaky Albany defense early, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning without a hit. Campbell reached on an error, advanced on another error and scored on a throwing error. He later came home on an RBI groundout by Lorenzo Camilleri. The Highlanders added another unearned run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Francis after two more Albany errors.

Albany’s offense was quiet for much of the game, managing just five hits. McAllister went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Filippi had an RBI single and a walk.

Campbell led NJIT’s 11-hit attack, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Francis drove in two runs.

The game defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which gave NJIT a 60.2% probability to win and simulated a final score of 5-1.

The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
