Brown at Yale

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Drew Nelson delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and Alex Benevento provided a decisive solo home run as the Brown Bears edged the Yale Bulldogs 2-1 on Saturday in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Yale Field.

The contest was a stark contrast to pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 6-4 Yale victory, giving the Bulldogs a 69.4% probability to win. Instead, it became a tense pitchers’ duel defined by a single swing.

Brown (6-10, 1-0 Ivy) seized an early lead without a hit in the top of the first inning. Yale starter Alex Hwang struggled with command, hitting two batters and walking another to load the bases. Matt Luigs then grounded out to third, allowing two runs to score on the play.

Yale (9-7, 0-1) answered immediately in the bottom half against Brown’s Nelson. Bryce Miller led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Kaiden Dossa. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases with a hit batter and two stolen bases, but Nelson escaped further damage by striking out Davis Hanson to end the threat.

From that point, both starters settled into a rhythm. Yale’s Ben Winslow, who relieved Hwang in the third inning, was dominant, striking out eight over seven innings while allowing just four hits and one unearned run. His counterpart, however, was nearly untouchable.

Nelson, Brown’s top star, retired 16 consecutive Bulldogs after the first-inning trouble. He did not allow another hit, finishing with seven innings pitched, yielding just that one first-inning run on one hit and one walk while striking out four. His performance marked a dramatic turnaround from his previous outing on March 14 against Seton Hall, where he allowed four earned runs in three innings of relief.

The most important sequence of the game began in the top of the eighth with the score tied 1-1. Yale’s unearned run came in the seventh when Christian Butera doubled and later scored on a Yale error. Leading off the eighth against Winslow, Benevento connected on a solo home run to left field, breaking the tie and ultimately providing the winning margin.

Yale mounted its final serious threat in the bottom of the eighth after Nelson was relieved by Christian Keel. Miller walked and Dossa singled, putting the tying and go-ahead runs on base with no outs. Keel, however, induced a strikeout and two flyouts to end the inning, stranding both runners. He worked a perfect ninth to secure the save, sealing the narrow victory for the Bears.

Both teams finished with five hits. Dossa led Yale, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Jackson Hays also had two hits for the Bulldogs. For Brown, Mika Petersen went 2 for 4.

The victory gave Brown a positive start to its Ivy League schedule and set the stage for the second game of the doubleheader later Saturday.
