Alabama A&M at Grambling
GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — The Grambling Tigers erupted for a 19-run offensive barrage, powered by a career day from Cameron Hill, to crush the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 19-4 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball game Saturday at Memorial Gym.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, was a stark departure from the previous night’s tight contest and defied statistical projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring 3-2 Grambling victory, but the Tigers’ bats rendered that forecast obsolete early and often.
Alabama A&M (5-18, 0-2 SWAC) struck first without a hit in the opening inning, plating a run on a wild pitch after loading the bases with walks. That 1-0 lead was short-lived.
Grambling (8-12, 2-0) responded immediately in the bottom of the first, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring four times to seize control. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Hill and a two-run double from Charles Ashe III, erasing the early deficit.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the second inning, where Grambling broke the game open for good. After a walk and a wild pitch, Hill stepped in and launched a two-run homer to left field, extending the lead to 6-1 and setting the tone for the remainder of the lopsided affair.
Hill, the Tigers’ left fielder, was the undeniable star. He finished the day 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, and six RBIs, driving in runs in three separate innings. His performance built on a solid game in Friday’s series opener, where he drove in two runs in a 9-8 win.
Grambling starter Keyon Guillory earned the win, working four innings and allowing two earned runs on just two hits while striking out five. Mohamed Harati followed with three innings of relief to close it out.
The Tigers’ offense was relentless, drawing 13 walks and capitalizing on three Alabama A&M errors to score seven unearned runs. Every Grambling starter reached base at least once. Shannon Martin added a two-run homer in the sixth inning as part of a six-run frame, and Julio Vasquez Sanzsole also homered. Chris Marcellus and Ashe III each drove in two runs.
For Alabama A&M, which managed eight hits, the pitching staff struggled with command throughout. Starter Edyn Barber failed to record an out in the first inning, and four relievers combined to issue 13 walks and hit five batters. Evan Hurlburt took the loss. Pinch-hitter KJ Stanfield provided one of the few bright spots with an RBI double in the seventh inning.
The victory gave Grambling a 2-0 series lead heading into Sunday’s finale. The Tigers will look for the sweep, while the Bulldogs aim to salvage a game before continuing their difficult season.
