Brown at Yale
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Kaiden Dossa homered and drove in four runs, Jack Dauer added a homer and three RBIs, and the Yale Bulldogs overcame an early seven-run deficit to defeat the Brown Bears 14-7 on Saturday at Yale Field in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader.
The Bulldogs, who tallied 14 hits, improved to 9-6 overall. The Bears, who had 10 hits, fell to 5-10.
Brown erupted for five runs in the top of the first inning against Yale starter Jack Ohman. Matt Luigs and Mark Henshon led off with singles, and after a strikeout, DJ Dillehay doubled down the left-field line to score Luigs. Logan Meusy followed with a two-run single to center, plating both Henshon and Dillehay for a 4-0 lead. The Bears added two more runs in the third on a solo home run by Dillehay and an RBI single from Mika Petersen.
The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the third inning, when Yale’s offense awoke to begin its comeback. Trailing 7-0, the Bulldogs sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs to get back into the game. Colin Sloan and Dossa delivered RBI singles before Dauer cleared the bases with a two-run single. Chris Diprima capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 7-5.
Yale reliever Tate Evans entered in the fourth inning and stifled the Brown offense, allowing one earned run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. His performance stabilized the game after Ohman failed to record an out in the fourth.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer by Dauer and took the lead for good later in the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brown starter Peter Dubie was relieved by Matt Wilmarth, who promptly walked Bryce Miller to force in the go-ahead run.
Yale broke the game open with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, highlighted by Dossa’s two-run homer to left field. The Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by Jack Hays and a double play groundout that scored a run.
Dillehay was the standout for Brown, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Petersen added two hits and an RBI.
For Yale, Dossa finished 3 for 6 with the homer and four RBIs, continuing a strong stretch at the plate. Dauer was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, Sloan went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Davis Hanson contributed a double and an RBI.
Dubie took the loss for Brown, surrendering eight earned runs on six hits and six walks over 4 2/3 innings. Wilmarth was charged with four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
The game was the first of a doubleheader between the Ivy League foes. Yale entered as a significant favorite, with Interstat’s ELO system giving the Bulldogs a 69.4 percent probability to win. The final score surpassed the projection of a 6-4 Yale victory from Interstat’s game simulator.
