Ethan Lay Dominates with 11 Strikeouts as Hornets Rout Eagles in Series Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Ethan Lay delivered a masterful pitching performance Thursday, striking out 11 over eight dominant innings to lead Sacramento State to a 13-1 victory over Winthrop at John Smith Field.

The Hornets’ offense erupted for 12 hits, breaking open a tight game with a three-run second inning. Erick Dessens drove in three runs, including a two-run single in that frame, and Sam Harry added an RBI as part of a three-hit day. Winthrop managed just two hits total, with its lone run scoring on a ninth-inning wild pitch.

Lay allowed only one hit and walked none, improving to 2-0 after a 10-strikeout outing last week. The loss dropped Winthrop to 15-7, while Sacramento State moved to 9-13. The teams continue their series Friday.
