South Carolina Upstate at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers, riding high after a ranked road win, return home to face the South Carolina Upstate Spartans in a midweek non-conference baseball game Wednesday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies with a game-time temperature near 45 degrees.
Charlotte (14-6) enters with momentum following an 11-8 victory at South Carolina on Tuesday. The 49ers’ bullpen was pivotal, notably a four-inning, hitless relief appearance by Adam Stanton, who struck out five. Stanton, a key arm for Charlotte, has not allowed an earned run in four of his last five outings.
The Spartans (10-11) look to rebound from a 7-5 home loss to High Point on Sunday. Offensive catalyst Kenan Bowman provided the power in that defeat, blasting a three-run homer. The right fielder is 6 for 23 (.261) with seven RBIs over his last 10 games, but carries a five-game hitting streak into Wednesday’s contest.
The teams are on divergent tracks. Charlotte has won seven of its last nine, including a series win over then-Virginia. South Carolina Upstate has dropped eight of its last 11, a stretch that included a difficult road sweep at the hands of the Texas Longhorns.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for the 49ers.
Following Wednesday’s game, Charlotte opens a three-game series at Wichita State on Friday. South Carolina Upstate begins Big South Conference play at Longwood on Friday.
