Rice at Houston

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Houston Cougars delivered a powerful and decisive statement against crosstown foe Rice on Tuesday night, erupting for a 13-1 victory at M.O. Campbell Center that was far more lopsided than even the most optimistic projections.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a tight 6-5 final, but the Cougars rendered that forecast obsolete almost immediately, using a combination of early power and relentless pressure to dominate from the outset.

Rice’s Owls managed a fleeting lead in the top of the first inning when Robson singled, but he was promptly caught stealing. That would be the high-water mark for the visitors, as Houston’s response in the bottom half was swift and emphatic.

After Helton singled, right fielder Xavier Perez connected on a two-run homer to left-center field, his fourth of the season, to give Houston a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish. The early blast set the tone for an evening where the Cougars capitalized on nearly every opportunity.

The most important sequence of the game, however, arrived in the bottom of the fourth inning, turning a manageable deficit into a rout. Already leading 4-1, Houston loaded the bases against Rice starter Jeremiah Arnett, who was relieved by Ethan Atchley. After a sacrifice fly made it 5-1, designated hitter Carsten Sabathia crushed a two-run homer to left field, his fifth of the year, stretching the lead to 7-1 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Houston’s offensive barrage was supported by a stellar start from pitcher Caden Cooper, who earned top star honors. Cooper silenced the Owls over 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out two. His performance provided crucial stability, improving upon his recent relief appearances and giving the Cougars’ bats a chance to build an insurmountable lead.

Rice’s offense never found a rhythm, mustering only three hits total. The Owls scored their lone run in the eighth when Davila grounded out to bring home Webb, who had walked and advanced on a double by Ashlock. Relievers Carson Kuhn and Jackson Blank provided brief scoreless relief for Rice, but the early damage was too severe to overcome.

The Cougars sealed the victory with an exclamation point in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Justin Cherrington, who had entered the game earlier, launched a grand slam to left field, his first home run of the season, to account for the final 13-1 margin. The blast capped a five-run inning that also featured an RBI walk from Sintek.

Houston’s 14-hit attack was led by Jackson LaLima, who went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Perez finished with three RBIs on his first-inning homer, while Sabathia drove in two. Alex Solis followed Cooper with 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief.

With the win, Houston improved its season record to 11-5, while Rice fell to 9-8. The victory extended Houston’s recent momentum after taking a weekend series from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, while the Owls saw a modest two-game win streak snapped following a series loss at Abilene Christian.

The Cougars will look to carry this offensive momentum into a weekend series against Kansas State beginning Friday at home. Rice travels to Phoenix for a pair of weekend games, facing Saint Mary’s and Grand Canyon on Friday to begin a lengthy road trip.
