Dallas Baptist at Oklahoma State
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Interstat) — Campbell Smithwick launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday, lifting Oklahoma State to a 6-5 comeback victory over Dallas Baptist at O’Brate Stadium.
The Cowboys, trailing 5-2 after five innings, rallied with a trio of home runs before Smithwick’s decisive blast to right-center field off reliever Ryan Long ended the nonconference matchup. It was Smithwick’s first homer of the season.
Oklahoma State improved to 12-4, while Dallas Baptist fell to 9-8.
The Patriots built their early lead by capitalizing on mistakes and timely hitting. They plated an unearned run in the fourth after an error by Cowboys third baseman Aidan Meola. The big blow came in the third inning when Tom Martin connected for a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, scoring Alex Krauss who had doubled, to extend the Dallas Baptist lead to 5-2.
Oklahoma State starter Gabe Fyke struggled, surrendering five runs, four earned, on eight hits over three innings. The Cowboys’ bullpen, however, was flawless. Stormy Rhodes entered in the fourth and provided 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four. Brennan Phillips and Gabe Wech followed with 2 1/3 perfect frames to keep the comeback within reach.
The turning point came in the bottom of the sixth against Dallas Baptist reliever Athan Kroll. After Meola was hit by a pitch, Colin Brueggemann hammered a two-run homer to right-center, his fourth of the season, cutting the deficit to 5-4. TP Wentworth followed on the very next pitch with a solo shot down the left-field line, his second, to tie the game at 5-5.
Dallas Baptist squandered a prime opportunity in the top of the ninth. A single by pinch-hitter Chase Grady and a walk put two on with no outs, but a double play and a groundout ended the threat.
The Patriots outhit the Cowboys 10-9 but grounded into three double plays. Jerrod Jenkins started strong for Dallas Baptist, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Kroll was charged with the three sixth-inning runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work, taking the loss.
For Oklahoma State, Smithwick finished 2 for 5 with the game-winning RBI. Wentworth went 2 for 3 with his homer, and Brueggemann’s two-run shot provided the critical momentum shift.
The most important sequence of the game was the back-to-back home runs by Brueggemann and Wentworth in the sixth inning. That two-pitch span erased Dallas Baptist’s three-run lead, completely shifted the game’s momentum to the Oklahoma State dugout, and set the stage for the extra-inning finish. Prior to that, the Cowboys’ offense had been stifled since the first inning, and the Patriots’ bullpen appeared in control. The sudden power surge revitalized Oklahoma State and ultimately made Smithwick’s later heroics possible.
Dallas Baptist opens a three-game home series with New Mexico State on Friday. Oklahoma State travels to Orlando to begin a three-game series at UCF, also on Friday.
