Missouri State at Southeast Missouri State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Interstat) — Josiah Hall launched two home runs and drove in five runs, powering Southeast Missouri State to a 13-6 victory over Missouri State in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Capaha Field.

The Redhawks (11-7) erupted for eight runs in a decisive third inning, capitalizing on a series of Missouri State miscues to turn a one-run deficit into a commanding lead they would not relinquish. The Bears (10-6), who entered as slight favorites according to national projections, saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

The most important part of the game was the bottom of the third inning, where Southeast Missouri State sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs, all unearned, to break open a tight contest. The frame was fueled by critical Missouri State errors and highlighted by Hall’s three-run homer.

Missouri State had taken an early lead when Logan Fyffe hit a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the second. The Redhawks responded with five runs in their half of the inning, with Hall’s first homer, a two-run shot to right field, tying the game at 5-5 after a Bears error extended the inning.

The game unraveled completely for Missouri State in the third. After Dakota Joggerst doubled and scored on a Caleb Klein single to tie the game at 6-6, a fielding error loaded the bases. A wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score before Hall stepped up again. The designated hitter demolished a pitch to left field for a three-run homer, his second of the game, making it 10-6. The Redhawks continued to pour it on, adding three more runs on a Joggerst RBI double and a two-run single by Andrew Ramirez before the inning finally ended.

Hall finished 2 for 4 and now has three home runs in his last five games. Klein went 3 for 6 with three RBIs, and Joggerst was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, an RBI and three runs scored.

Missouri State, which finished with 11 hits, showed brief signs of life. Taeg Gollert hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and Curry Sutherland added a two-run shot in the seventh. Sutherland, who also pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Gollert each had two hits and two RBIs. Fyffe also had two hits, including his homer.

The Bears’ bullpen provided some stability after the rocky start. Trenton Ash, Charlie Spoonhour and Sutherland combined for four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out five. For Southeast Missouri State, reliever Jackson Kranawetter shut the door with two perfect innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Missouri State 8-7 victory, and its ELO system gave the Bears a 55.2% probability to win, but the Redhawks’ offensive explosion rendered those forecasts obsolete.

Missouri State travels to face Liberty for a three-game series starting Friday. Southeast Missouri State hits the road for a three-game set at Wright State, also beginning Friday.
