San Diego at California
BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — The San Diego Toreros and California Golden Bears open a two-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at Evans Diamond, with the first game featuring two of the West Coast’s hotter teams.
First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 68 degrees.
The Golden Bears (9-3) enter riding a five-game winning streak, including a 15-6 midweek rout of Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday. First baseman Daniel Murillo powered that victory, going 5 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs. Murillo is batting .429 (12 for 28) with two homers and 10 RBIs during California’s current streak.
San Diego (7-4) looks to rebound after dropping two of three at home to Michigan last weekend, including a 9-2 loss on Sunday. A bright spot in that defeat was reliever Hayden Cody, who threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Cody has allowed just one earned run over his last 5 2/3 innings of work.
The teams met Friday, with California shutting out San Diego. Historical trends favor the Golden Bears, who have won seven of the last ten meetings between the programs.
Pitching matchups for the doubleheader were not announced.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a narrow 7-6 California victory, while its ELO rating system gives a slight 50.7% win probability to San Diego.
Following Saturday’s twin bill, the series concludes Sunday. San Diego then visits Southern California on Wednesday before hosting Oregon State next weekend. California travels to San Jose State on Tuesday before a challenging home series against North Carolina.
