Cal State Fullerton at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Big West rivals seeking momentum will meet Saturday when Cal State Bakersfield hosts Cal State Fullerton in the second game of their weekend series at Hardt Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 65 degrees.

The Roadrunners (5-8) took the series opener Friday, shutting out the Titans (4-8). Both teams have struggled for consistency in non-conference play. Cal State Fullerton is looking to rebound from a 4-3, 10-inning loss at UCLA on Tuesday, while Cal State Bakersfield is coming off a 15-6 defeat at California on Wednesday.

A key matchup will feature Cal State Bakersfield’s hot-hitting Evan Cloyd against a Cal State Fullerton pitching staff that held UCLA to four runs. Cloyd, a first baseman, is coming off a 3-for-3, three-RBI performance against California and is batting .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs and nine RBIs over his last four games.

For the Titans, reliever Jason Krakoski has been a bright spot. He pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings against UCLA and has not allowed a hit in his last two appearances, spanning 1 1/3 innings.

Offensively, Cal State Fullerton will rely on third baseman Ty Thomas, who homered and drove in two runs against the Bruins. The Titans’ bats broke out for 16 runs in a win over Xavier on March 1 but were held to three runs or fewer in their other three games last week.

Cal State Bakersfield’s offense has shown explosive potential, scoring 15 runs in a win at Texas Tech on March 1, but has also been held to four runs or less in six of its eight losses.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Cal State Bakersfield 4, Cal State Fullerton 2.

The three-game series concludes Sunday at Hardt Field.
