Florida Gulf Coast at Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — Jon Embury homered and drove in four runs, Chris Diaz and two relievers combined on a six-hit effort, and the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles overpowered the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 13-5 on Saturday.
The Eagles (12-3) clinched the weekend series after a win Friday and did so with an offensive barrage, racking up 19 hits. The Wildcats fell to 9-6.
The most important sequence of the game came early, as Florida Gulf Coast broke open a scoreless contest with a four-run second inning that chased Wildcats starter Edwin Sanchez. With two on and one out, Embury singled to drive in Jaret Nelson. Javier Gorostola then launched a three-run homer to left-center field, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead and setting the tone for the remainder of the afternoon.
Diaz (1-0) was dominant in his start for the Eagles, earning the win with six strong innings. He allowed just one unearned run on three walks and no hits, striking out three. He faced the minimum through four innings before the Wildcats scratched across three unearned runs in the fifth, keyed by a two-run triple from Jeter Polledo.
Florida Gulf Coast responded immediately, adding three runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Evan Dempsey and an RBI single and sacrifice fly from Wilfred Gonzalez and Jeremy Comer, respectively, to extend the lead to 7-3.
Embury, the Eagles’ catcher, put the game out of reach in the seventh. After a walk and a single, he blasted a three-run homer to center field off reliever Logan Wirt, capping a 4-for-5 day and pushing the advantage to 10-3. Embury, who also doubled and scored three runs, has six home runs and 10 RBIs in the first two games of this series.
Gorostola finished 2-for-3 with the three-run homer, a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored. Cayden Hessemyer and Jeremy Comer each had two hits and an RBI.
Bethune-Cookman’s offense was stifled after the fifth inning. Following Diaz’s exit, relievers Logan Eisenbarth and Mattox Meeks closed the door. Eisenbarth pitched two innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Meeks worked a perfect seventh inning.
The Wildcats managed just six hits, with Polledo providing the bulk of their production, going 2-for-5 with a triple, double and two RBIs. Michael Rodriguez had a single and scored a run.
Sanchez (0-1) took the loss for Bethune-Cookman, surrendering four runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. Wildcats relievers Dawson Turner and Ethan Diaz provided bright spots, combining for 2 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
The Eagles’ victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated an 8-7 Florida Gulf Coast win and gave the Eagles a 67.5% probability of victory.
The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday.
