Pacific at Nevada

RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — Jacob Doyle broke out of a brief slump in emphatic fashion, driving in six runs on four hits, including two home runs, to power the Nevada Wolf Pack to a 10-5 victory over the Pacific Tigers in college baseball Saturday at William Peccole Park.

The win improved Nevada to 7-5 on the season, while Pacific fell to 6-8. The game defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a narrow 6-5 Pacific victory, though Nevada’s ELO probability to win was high at 76.5%.

Doyle, the Nevada right fielder who had been hitless in his previous nine at-bats over three games, was the catalyst. His two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning off Pacific starter Bryce Cruz erased an early deficit and ignited the Wolf Pack offense. He added an RBI double in the fourth and another run-scoring double in the fifth, before capping his day with a towering two-run homer to center field in the seventh inning, his second of the game and the season.

Pacific had seized an early lead against Nevada starter Aidan Brainard. Robert Orr’s RBI double in the second inning scored Blaine, and Derek followed with an RBI single to plate Orr, staking the Tigers to a 2-0 advantage. They extended the lead to 3-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Grant that scored Shank.

The most important sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning, turning a tight contest into a Nevada-controlled affair. With the score tied 5-5, Pacific reliever Max Goldberg, who had provided 1 2/3 scoreless innings, was replaced by Cruz with a runner on second and one out. Cruz was immediately tagged for an RBI single by Jake Harvey, scoring Matsuzaki to give Nevada a 6-5 lead. After Harvey stole second, Doyle delivered his second RBI double of the day. The two-run outburst gave Nevada a 7-5 lead and marked a decisive shift in momentum, as the Wolf Pack bullpen would not relinquish the advantage.

Nevada’s Eddie Tierney provided critical relief, entering in the sixth inning and throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits to stifle any Pacific comeback attempt. Pacific’s Orr was a bright spot in the loss, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. His two-run homer in the sixth briefly narrowed the gap to 7-5 before Tierney took over.

The Wolf Pack put the game out of reach in the seventh. Following Doyle’s second homer, Jackson Waller added a solo shot to left field, capping a three-run inning that extended the lead to 10-5.

Nevada’s offense amassed 17 hits, with Harvey collecting three and Rominic Quiban adding two RBIs. Pacific managed nine hits but could not overcome its pitching struggles, as Cruz was charged with four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday. Pacific will travel to face Sacramento State on Wednesday, while Nevada heads to Stanford the same day.
