Tarleton State at New Mexico
Preview: Tarleton State Texans at New Mexico Lobos
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — The New Mexico Lobos look to rebound from a high-scoring loss when they host the Tarleton State Texans on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
First pitch is scheduled for March 7, 2026.
The Lobos (12-2) saw their potent offense overshadowed by pitching struggles in a 13-11 series-opening defeat to the Texans (8-5) on Friday. New Mexico, which entered the weekend averaging over 10 runs per game, will aim to tighten its defense after the teams combined for 24 runs and 27 hits.
Tarleton State, riding a three-game winning streak, will seek to carry its offensive momentum into the twin bill. The Texans’ lineup, led by key contributors from Friday like Slade McCloud, Rayner Heinrich and Brady Englett, has averaged 9.25 runs during the streak, which includes a midweek victory over Baylor.
New Mexico’s offense remains formidable despite the loss. The Lobos have scored seven or more runs in 10 of their 14 games this season, including a 24-run outburst against Fordham on Feb. 15. Key performers from Friday, such as Damian Garcia and Luke Mansy, will look to provide early support for a pitching staff seeking stability.
Saturday’s opener presents a contrast in recent trajectories. The Texans have won five of their last six, while the Lobos suffered just their second loss after a 12-1 start to the season. New Mexico’s only other defeat was an 8-6 road loss to rival New Mexico State on Tuesday.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is New Mexico 7, Tarleton State 5.
The doubleheader will be a quick test of depth for both clubs before the series finale on Sunday. For Tarleton State, the weekend represents a significant non-conference challenge ahead of a Tuesday trip to Incarnate Word. New Mexico will look to secure a series win before embarking on a Mountain West Conference road trip to San Jose State next weekend.
