Lindenwood (MO) at Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes look to secure a series win when they host the Lindenwood Lions in the second game of a weekend set Saturday at Duane Banks Field.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 68 degrees.
Iowa (6-4) took the series opener Friday afternoon, 11-6, powered by a strong start from right-hander Jaron Bleeker and a three-RBI afternoon from designated hitter Mitch Wood. The Hawkeyes have won four of their last five games.
Lindenwood (5-8) seeks to even the series after dropping five of its last six contests. The Lions were led in Friday’s loss by third baseman Tyler Ellis, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The pitching matchup features a quick rematch from Friday’s game. Lindenwood is expected to start right-hander Josh Newell, who took the loss in relief despite a unique line: 5 1/3 innings, zero hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts. In his last start on Feb. 27, Newell earned a win over Northern Illinois, allowing three runs over six innings.
Iowa will counter with Bleeker, who earned the victory Friday after tossing six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight. The right-hander has been dominant in recent outings, having not allowed a hit over a combined 8 2/3 innings against Houston and Florida Atlantic last month.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Iowa 5, Lindenwood 3.
Following Saturday’s contest, the series concludes Sunday afternoon. Iowa then hosts Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Tuesday before opening Big Ten Conference play next weekend at Penn State. Lindenwood returns home to host Bradley on Tuesday and Wednesday.
