Penn State at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Tech offense erupted for 21 runs on 18 hits, overcoming an early six-run deficit to rout Penn State 21-6 in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Red Raiders erase the Nittany Lions’ opening salvo with a relentless barrage that spanned multiple innings. The victory improved Texas Tech’s record to 9-4, while Penn State fell to 4-8.

The most important part of the game unfolded immediately after Penn State’s explosive start. The Nittany Lions’ Cohl Mercado launched a solo home run to right field on the game’s first pitch, sparking a six-run top of the first inning. Instead of folding, Texas Tech responded with a historic bottom half.

The Red Raiders sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs on five hits to completely shift the game’s momentum. After a walk, a stolen base and an RBI single by Owen Shouse made it 6-1, the inning was truly broken open by Jesse Rusinek. With the bases loaded, Rusinek cleared them with a three-run triple to right-center field, pulling Texas Tech within a run at 6-5. Two batters later, Robin Villeneuve followed with a two-run homer to right, giving the Red Raiders a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish. The seven-run inning set the tone for the remainder of the lopsided contest.

Texas Tech continued to pour it on, adding four runs in the second inning and at least one run in each of the next four frames. Rusinek was the catalyst, driving in five runs on the day with a triple in the first and another in the second, finishing 3 for 4. Logan Hughes also delivered a powerful performance, going 2 for 2 with a three-run homer in the sixth, a walk and four RBIs. Villeneuve drove in four runs, including his first-inning homer.

Penn State briefly showed life in the third when Michael Anderson hit a two-run homer following a Mercado single, cutting the Texas Tech lead to 11-8. Mercado finished 3 for 4 with the homer. The Nittany Lions managed 10 hits but could not keep pace with the Red Raiders’ offensive onslaught.

Texas Tech reliever Brady Trombello closed the game with a dominant seventh inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced. Penn State’s Harrison Lollin also provided a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two.

The game defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had forecast a final score of Penn State 4, Texas Tech 8. While Texas Tech was given a 66.6% probability to win by the same service’s ELO system, the margin of victory far exceeded expectations.

The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday. Penn State travels to face Georgetown next Tuesday and Wednesday, while Texas Tech hosts Texas-San Antonio on those same days before both teams open conference play next weekend.
