Oakland at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas A&M Aggies continued their dominant start to the season, overwhelming the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 12-1 in a nonconference baseball game Saturday evening at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Aggies, improving to 12-1, used a pair of big innings and a stellar start from right-hander Aiden Sims to secure their second straight win over Oakland in the weekend series. The Golden Grizzlies fell to 1-12.
Sims, the top star for Texas A&M, earned the win with five scoreless innings. He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out four, effectively silencing the Oakland offense early. It continued a strong run for Sims, who now has a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts, including a 10-strikeout performance against Penn on Feb. 22.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Aggies broke open a tight contest. Leading just 2-1, Texas A&M sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs, only two of which were earned due to a critical Oakland error. The inning featured a two-run single by Blake Binderup and a two-run throwing error by Oakland third baseman Brandon Griffith that allowed two more to score. Caden Sorrell and Kaeden Kent added run-scoring hits to cap the outburst, turning a one-run game into an 8-1 rout.
Texas A&M put the game completely out of reach an inning later. After Nico Partida led off the fifth with a single, Binderup launched a two-run homer to left-center field. Later in the inning, with a runner on, Sorrell smashed another two-run shot to right-center, making it 12-1. Sorrell finished a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Binderup went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, while Partida was 3 for 4 with a solo homer in the second inning.
Oakland’s lone run came in unconventional fashion in the top of the first inning without a hit. Leadoff hitter Brandon Schuck reached on a fielding error by Aggies shortstop Jace LaViolette, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball and scored on another wild pitch. The Golden Grizzlies managed eight hits but stranded seven runners and hit into two double plays. Their bullpen provided a bright spot as Wyatt Ruppenthal, Ryan Donley and Jaxson Easterlin combined for 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, though Easterlin was charged with three unearned runs.
The result closely mirrored the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-1 Texas A&M victory. The Aggies’ ELO rating gave them a 93.7% probability to win.
Oakland looks to avoid the series sweep on Sunday before heading to Akron on Wednesday. Texas A&M will host Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday before opening a marquee road series at Oklahoma next weekend.
