Tarleton State at New Mexico

Preview: Tarleton State at New Mexico (Game 1 of Doubleheader)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — The New Mexico Lobos look to rebound from a wild opening loss in the series when they host the Tarleton State Texans in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.

First pitch is scheduled for March 7, 2026. The second game will follow approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.

The Lobos (12-2), one of the nation’s hottest teams to start the season, saw their nine-game winning streak snapped in a 13-11 slugfest against the Texans on Friday. New Mexico’s potent offense, averaging over nine runs per game, was outlasted by Tarleton State’s late rally.

The Texans (8-5) have won four of their last five, with Friday’s victory marking their most significant win of the young season. They will aim to secure a series win in the twin bill.

A key matchup will feature two of Friday’s top performers. Tarleton State second baseman Slade McCloud is riding a six-game hitting streak. He went 3 for 6 with three RBIs in the series opener and is batting .500 (10 for 20) with eight RBIs over his last five contests.

New Mexico will counter with center fielder Khalil Walker, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs on Friday. Walker has been a consistent force, recording a hit in 10 of his 12 games played this season.

On the mound, both teams will seek more stability after Friday’s combined 24 runs and 28 hits. Tarleton State reliever Karsen Davis provided a bright spot with 1 1/3 scoreless innings to close the win. New Mexico’s Cristian Mogen took the loss despite a quality start, allowing three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projection favors the Lobos to even the series with a 7-5 victory in Game 1.

The series concludes Sunday. Tarleton State travels to Incarnate Word on Tuesday, while New Mexico begins Mountain West Conference play at San Jose State next Friday.
