Connecticut at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — The Connecticut Huskies look to secure a series win when they visit the Old Dominion Monarchs in the second game of their weekend set Saturday afternoon at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 58 degrees.

Connecticut (6-7) took the opener 4-2 on Friday behind a strong pitching performance. The Huskies will aim for a similar formula Saturday, handing the ball to right-hander Charlie West. West has been dominant in his last three starts, not allowing a hit over 16 innings pitched. In Friday’s win, he threw five hitless innings, allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts.

Old Dominion (7-5) will counter with righty Patrick Johnson, who seeks to help his team even the series. Johnson has been effective in relief recently, posting a 0.00 ERA over his last three appearances spanning 7 1/3 innings, though the Monarchs lost each of those games. He threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in Friday’s loss.

The Huskies’ offense was sparked Friday by left fielder Chase McCombsTaylor, who drove in two runs. Old Dominion’s bullpen, featuring Jayce Park and Darin Kuskie, kept the game close after the early deficit.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Old Dominion 6, Connecticut 5.

Following Saturday’s contest, the series concludes Sunday in Norfolk. Connecticut then hosts Boston College on Tuesday, while Old Dominion travels to face East Carolina.
