Albany at Saint John`s
ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — Two teams searching for momentum will meet again Saturday when the Albany Great Danes face the Saint John’s Red Storm in the second game of a weekend series at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The first pitch is scheduled for late afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures near 39 degrees.
Both clubs enter with difficult early-season records. Albany (0-8) remains winless, while Saint John’s (2-10) has struggled to find consistency. The Red Storm narrowly took the series opener Friday in 15 innings, 2-1.
The matchup features a compelling pitching rematch from that marathon contest. Albany’s Matthew Mariano, a player to watch, was brilliant in a no-decision Friday, tossing 7 2/3 hitless innings with five strikeouts. Over his last three appearances, he has allowed just one earned run in 12 1/3 innings.
He will be opposed by Saint John’s right-hander Liam O’Leary, who earned the win Friday after holding the Great Danes to one run over seven strong innings, striking out eight. In his previous start at Kentucky on Feb. 27, O’Leary carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning.
Albany’s offense, which managed only six hits in the opener, will look to break through against O’Leary and support Mariano. The Great Danes have been outscored 75-26 this season.
Saint John’s, which has lost series to Kentucky and Arizona State, aims to build on Friday’s gritty victory. The Red Storm bullpen, led by Victor Frederick and Jack Nestler, combined for eight scoreless innings after O’Leary departed.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, another low-scoring affair is projected, with Saint John’s favored 2-1.
The series concludes Sunday at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Albany will visit Yale next weekend, while Saint John’s hosts Fairfield on Tuesday before a road trip to Charlotte.
