Mercyhurst at Coppin State
ELKRIDGE, Md. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking a spark will meet again Saturday when the Coppin State Eagles host the Mercyhurst Lakers in the second game of a weekend series at Joe Cannon Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon. The forecast calls for cloudy skies and a temperature of 47 degrees.
The Eagles (1-8) edged the Lakers (0-8) 2-1 in a pitchers’ duel Friday night. Both teams will look for another strong outing from their starters.
Mercyhurst will watch right-hander Matthew Delvaux, who delivered a standout performance in defeat Friday. He pitched 5 2/3 hitless innings, allowing one earned run while striking out six. His season, however, has been uneven, including a Feb. 27 outing against Murray State where he surrendered nine earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Coppin State will counter with right-hander Jake Cumming, who earned the win Friday. He held the Lakers to one run on five hits over 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven. Like Delvaux, Cumming has experienced volatility, giving up five earned runs in just 1 1/3 innings at Oklahoma on Feb. 22 before his strong showing against Mercyhurst.
The matchup features two lineups struggling for consistent offense. Mercyhurst has been held to two runs or fewer in five of its eight losses. Coppin State’s lone win Friday snapped a seven-game skid, a stretch where they were outscored 92-17.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, another low-scoring affair is projected, with Mercyhurst favored 1-0. A Lakers win would be their first of the season, while the Eagles aim to secure their first series victory.
The weekend series, organized by the Northeast, concludes Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium.
