Omaha vs. Northwestern

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Omaha Mavericks and Northwestern Wildcats are set for a nonconference matchup Saturday in Minneapolis, with inclement weather expected to play a role at Siebert Field.

First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, though forecasts call for rainy conditions and a temperature of 46 degrees.

Omaha (4-8) looks to rebound from a 9-1 home loss to Southern Illinois on Friday. The Mavericks have dropped five of their last six, with their lone win in that stretch a 15-8 offensive outburst at Wichita State on Feb. 28.

A key to reigniting the offense will be first baseman Tyler Bishop. He leads the team with 10 RBIs over the last seven games, a stretch highlighted by a 4-for-5, two-RBI performance against Western Michigan and a home run in Tuesday’s loss at Nebraska.

Northwestern (5-5) enters after a weekend series at Georgia Tech where it was outscored 44-12 in three losses. The Wildcats’ most recent action was a 14-6 defeat last Sunday.

The Wildcats will rely on right-hander Garrett Shearer, who is expected to see significant innings. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief against Georgia Tech, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts. In his prior appearance, he threw three scoreless innings in a win over Cornell.

This game is part of a multi-team event in Minneapolis. The neutral-site contest features two teams seeking momentum before lengthy homestands. Omaha begins a nine-game home stretch next Friday, while Northwestern plays nine of its next 10 at its Evansville, Indiana, facility after this weekend.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Northwestern 5, Omaha 4.
