High Point at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The red-hot Florida Gators, boasting the nation’s top record, host the High Point Panthers in the second game of a weekend series Saturday afternoon at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 81 degrees.

Florida (13-1) continued its dominant start with a 7-5 win over Florida A&M on Wednesday and opened this series with a victory Friday night. The Gators’ lineup has been potent, averaging over eight runs per game.

High Point (7-6) looks to rebound after being shut out 8-0 by Liberty on Tuesday and dropping Friday’s series opener. The Panthers have shown resilience, winning three of their last five before the current skid.

A key matchup will feature High Point right-hander Mateo Wells, coming off a strong outing, against Florida’s versatile Caden McDonald. Wells pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his last start against Liberty. McDonald, a two-way player, threw three scoreless relief innings with three strikeouts against Florida A&M and is also a threat at the plate.

The Gators have dominated recent meetings, including Friday’s win. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Florida victory.

Following Saturday’s contest, the series concludes Sunday afternoon. Florida then prepares for a rivalry matchup with Florida State on Tuesday, while High Point returns home to host Duke.
