Pacific at Nevada
RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — Two teams riding the momentum of recent offensive breakouts will meet when the Pacific Tigers visit the Nevada Wolf Pack in a nonconference baseball series opener Friday at William Peccole Park.
Both clubs enter with .500 records. Pacific (6-6) is coming off an 11-5 road win at San Jose State on Tuesday, while Nevada (5-5) posted a 9-6 victory at Stanford on Monday.
A key player to watch for the Tigers is right-hander Liam Smith. He was dominant in his last outing, earning the win Tuesday with six innings of three-run ball, allowing just four hits and striking out four against San Jose State. His season, however, has been a mix of highs and lows, including a difficult relief appearance on Feb. 25 where he allowed five earned runs in just 1 1/3 innings against Sacramento State.
The Wolf Pack will counter with two-way standout Jayce Dobie, who is coming off a spectacular performance at Stanford. Serving as the designated hitter in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader, Dobie went 4 for 5 with three RBIs in the 9-6 win. He also pitches, having thrown four innings in the second game of that doubleheader, though he surrendered five earned runs. For the season, he is batting .333 (10 for 30) over his last eight games.
Pacific’s offense was led in its last game by Derek Bartram, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Nevada’s recent win featured Rominic Quiban, who drove in three runs.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Friday’s contest projects to be a tight one, with a predicted final score of Pacific 6, Nevada 5.
The series continues with games on Saturday and Sunday in Reno before both teams embark on separate midweek contests next Wednesday.
