San Diego at California

BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams riding opposite momentum waves will meet Friday when the San Diego Toreros visit the California Golden Bears in nonconference baseball action at Evans Diamond.

The Golden Bears (9-3) enter the series as one of the nation’s hottest teams, having won nine of their last 10 games. Their offense is powered by first baseman Daniel Murillo, who is coming off a career day in a 15-6 rout of Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday. Murillo went 5 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs in that victory, extending a torrid stretch where he has driven in 12 runs over his last eight games.

Conversely, the Toreros (7-4) look to rebound from a series loss at home to Michigan, where they were outscored 23-8 over the final two games. San Diego fell 9-2 on Sunday despite a strong relief outing from pitcher Hayden Cody, who threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Cody has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen, allowing no earned runs in four of his last five appearances.

California’s recent success has been built on consistent offense and pitching, scoring at least seven runs in five of their last six wins. San Diego’s season has been marked by volatility, with blowout wins like a 15-4 victory at San Diego State followed by narrow extra-inning defeats.

The Interstat game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, favoring California 7-6.

Friday’s opener begins a three-game weekend set. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday before concluding the series Sunday.
