Austin Peay at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — A surging Utah Tech squad looks to continue its dominant start when it hosts Austin Peay in the first game of a doubleheader Friday at Burns Arena.
The Trailblazers (11-1) have won 10 straight games, including a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado last weekend. Their lone loss came on Feb. 19 at Pacific. Austin Peay (5-6) arrives seeking consistency after dropping three of its last four, including a 3-0 loss at Cincinnati on Feb. 28.
The teams opened their series Thursday, with Utah Tech winning 8-0.
A marquee pitching matchup is expected in the opener. Austin Peay will likely turn to ace Kade Shatwell, who is coming off a historic performance despite a loss. Against Cincinnati last Saturday, the right-hander threw 8 hitless innings but was charged with three unearned runs in a 3-0 defeat. In his previous start, a 6-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 22, he threw 5 2/3 hitless innings. Over his last 13 2/3 innings, Shatwell has not allowed a hit.
He will face a potent Utah Tech lineup keyed by Gavin Glasgow. The designated hitter and first baseman delivered a signature performance last Sunday, driving in five runs, including a grand slam, in a 6-4 win over Northern Colorado. His power bat anchors a Trailblazers offense averaging over seven runs per game during their winning streak.
The Governors’ offense has struggled recently, scoring three or fewer runs in three of their last four games. Zion Taylor, who went 2-for-4 in the loss to Cincinnati, is a bright spot.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Utah Tech is projected to win 7-4. First pitch is scheduled for under cloudy skies with a temperature near 57 degrees.
Following the doubleheader, the series concludes Saturday. Austin Peay returns home to face Ohio next Tuesday, while Utah Tech travels to face BYU on March 10.
